The summer I turned 12 I bought an original 1943 copy of this novel from an old woman having a garage sale down the street from the apartment where I lived with my mother and sister. The book had seen better days, the spine was coming apart and the pages were yellow and brittle. I paid 25 cents for it. I don't even know what drew me to it, I just had a gut feeling. That was the best quarter I've ever spent. A Tree Grows in Brooklyn started my adult life as a reader. It is the book that originally made me want to write books, as well, for girls like Francie Nolan. For girls like me.
